ASHRAE defines system TAB as the process of checking and adjusting all building environmental systems to produce the design objectives.

   TEST:            To determine the quantitative performance of equipment

   ADJUST:      To proportion flows of fluids (air & water) to specified design quantities.

   BALANCE:  To regulate the specified fluid flow rate at the terminal equipment

Current HVAC systems utilize sophisticated, automatic controls to attain proper fluids for heating, cooling and ventilation in any building. Documentation and adherence to the above procedures are essential in order for the various HVAC system components to operate in synchronization and in accordance with design intent.

ITB provides Testing, Adjusting and Balancing of healthcare facilities. Results are recorded electronically on the Joint Commission or Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) forms for compliance review.

In addition, ITB performs quarterly testing to insure proper ventilation rates and compliance to the Joint Commission or IDPH standards. ITB also provides history/library of all previous tests. This data is critical in order to monitor changes as a result of HVAC modifications. ITB also provides pre-construction testing to identify existing airflows and pressure relationships prior to renovation.

Fume hood testing and certification should occur after installation of a hood or after any service work. It is strongly recommended that certification take place on a regular basis. ITB conducts fume hood testing by performing an inspection of the system, measuring air/face velocities and sash height positioning.

All hoods in compliance are labeled with an ITB Hood Certification sticker. The sticker will identify the test date, name of testing technician and the recorded face velocity. ITB maintains an electronic record of the all fume hood testing and certification for future reference.

TAB procedures utilized to verify that HVAC and related systems operate and perform as per design intent. Properly functioning systems contribute to energy savings and occupant's comfort, health and safety.

Duct leak testing can identify excessive leakage that will increase operating costs and the wear and tear on HVAC equipment. Reporting and documenting for corrective action will improve energy consumption as well as air movement, humidity and temperature.

The Federal government and local codes specify maximum allowable levels of sound and vibration. ITB provides sound and vibration testing and analysis generated by HVAC systems.

Periodic testing and inspection of key life safety systems such as Smoke Evacuation Systems, Fire Dampers and Stairwell Pressurization systems as well as indoor ventilation effectiveness.

Commissioning is a quality assurance process for buildings from pre design through design, construction, and operations. It involves achieving, verifying and documenting the performance of each system to meet the building's operational needs within the capabilities of the design and owner's functional criteria.

Re-Commissioning (RCx) is the systematic process of ensuring that all building (HVAC) systems are performing effectively and interactively as documented in the original commissioning report. This also involves an element of updating the owner's operational requirements to reflect the facility's current needs. This may result in changes to system setup and operational requirements that differ from the original commissioning plan.

Retro-Commissioning is the systematic process of ensuring that all buildings (HVAC) systems perform interactively to design performance requirements and according to the owner's current operation needs.
